I have a mare who always used to self load, and then after being on a transporter she decided that she didn't want to travel anymore and refused to load - I took my lunge line, threaded it through her halter over her nose and down to the 'ring' you would clip to normally, then just walked around the back of the float (not going near or to it) - she learnt quickly that if she stopped that pressure was applied to her nose but it was soft as soon as she was, next started walking across the ramp with me closest to the float, again if she stopped there was pressure, the next step was to walk into the float - she decided that wasn't wasn't so fun and did a couple of rears at the bottom of the ramp(but having the lunge and gloves it didn't matter I was able to keep hold of her without being too close to her) again she put pressure on her nose - she then casually walked up the ramp into the float and stood, I then asked her to back off which she did nice and quietly. I asked her up the float again, she hesitated momentarily - small pressure on her nose and she walked straight up. We had to practise this a few more times on different days - but she now loads herself again. Sorry for the novel, hope it makes sense.

if you have another horse that you could maybe use to have on  the float and your horse should go on easier, if she is really good at floating with you leading her in then self loading wont be too bad just walk up right to the end of the ramp leading her then let go and give her a tap on the bum it will be easier than you think (;

lol Paige was funny yesterday.

The trucking guy got the ramp down, pulled the bar thing to the side, then came back down the ramp. I chucked Paiges lead rope over her neck for her to stay there while i signed something.
Next we hear is "clomp clomp clomp", we look up, Paige is in the truck, turned herself around and was looking down at us! :laugh: was funny as :P

omg that is just too cute! :D

lol yeh, the driver was like "why cant all horses do that?!". they were an hour late cause the horse before wouldnt (and didnt) load

Haha I know a horse that you can't hold near the ramps unless you're running it up haha, she goes nuts if you try to hold her, but if you point her at it she's trot up the ramp, she LOVES going out.

lol aww... thats what Paige is like with floats.. she jigs on the spot if you hold her haha.. just let her go and she runs in haha. with the truck she just walked up and sorted herself out.. nawww i love have a good loader/traveller/unloader. its great!

haha all our horses self load, you just flick the lead rope over their neck and they walk up and settle themselves in :)

we just make sure the floating experience is never bad, its somewhere they like to be so they are happy to just walk on in :)

Just practise.... its easy enough for the horses to learn - the more they do it the easier it gets. It becomes habbit.

My old pony Cherokee used to walk up the ramp and turn herself around for you in the horse truck haha... all you had to do was watch! (and shut the bar lol)
