I have had experience with twins twice - both not good. Both mares were scanned but the twin must have been hiding :(

First time the mare carried to term but the weaker twin was born dead. The surviving twin has grown up healthy and strong but matured only to pony size (hack sized parents). The second time the mare slipped her twins at seven months and we lost all three of them.

So, if it were me I would abort. Normally we scan at 15 days and have the twin pinched and then carry out a re-scan at 21 days to see if the single foetus has survived. We have had a number of twin pregnancies pinched and the mares have gone on to foal single foals successfully.

Thanks for that. Yea I think she was scanned at 15 days? I'm obsessive compulsively checking my emails waiting to hear from the stud whether one has reabsorbed yet or whether they've had to get rid of both. Should hopefully know by tomorrow at the latest.

we scan our mare 15/16 days after service to see if the have twins because after that the eggs move closer to each other.

my parents had one experience. the stronger foal died when it was born and the weak one died a couple days after.
but ive read about successful twin foalings but i would abort them both and inseminate her all over again.
she hasnt had a foal for 6years and that would be harsh or her. the boss brought a mare that hadnt had a foal for 5years and when she foaled she walked away from it in shock, but only for a coupl of mins and decide she wanted her baby.

My mare has been scanned in foal, however the bad news is she's carrying twins! The vet can't squeeze one without losing them both as they are right next to each other, so if one of them doesn't resorb naturally, I'd like to know what the risks are to the foals and the mare if I were to choose to try and continue the pregnancy with them both in there? Or would I be better off to abort them both and inseminate her all over again?
Any feedback, personal experiences etc would be appreciated! It's a tough decision to make!!
If it helps, she's a 16.2hh warmblood that's gone to a 16.2hh Andalusian, and she is 16 this season, has had about 5 foals in the past, but hasn't had one for about 6 years.
