Oh dear, it would've helped wonderfully. At least you have found something she likes. I have a old horse which won't eat anything with molasses in it, because he thinks I might have hidden wormer in it. I've had him since he was born and he's been fed all sorts of stuff but molasses is totally a no go area. I hope your mare is making good progress. Once her foal is on the ground you'll be able to give her more stuff to help.

Our little Welshie mare gets the runs badly at this time of the year when the new growth comes through and especially if it has been wet too. She's never been in foal so it isn't quite the same problem as you've got. I would suggest yoghurt - the plain type with the special bacteria in it even some of that new yakult stuff. If she won't eat it get an old syringe - even a washed out wormer tube and give her small amounts is if it was wormer, no more than 30mls at a shot. Try to increase her fibre you could try a bran mash with molasses (not too much to begin) make sure its not too dry or too sloppy. Bran can work two ways  sloppy as a laxative and damp but not sloppy will help bind. Make sure it's not too dry though. Very hard to explain. Mix up the bran with hot water and leave to stand with an old hesian sack or towel over it for 20 mins, mix the molasses in the water (but you don't have to use molasses if your girl doesn't like it) add in chaff after it has been standing and any other yummy bits she might like. I would mix up a cupful to begin with to see if she'll eat it and if she does slowly up the amount, feed it to her in small amounts regularly through the day, like breaky, lunch and dinner. Bran is great stuff for helping mares put on weight and can have all sorts of stuff mixed with it. Even my fussiest eaters love it.

Oh Honeywell, how aweful. Poor girl(horse, oh and you) to be going through this. Maybe her age is a factor as well. I really do hope she pulls through. I'll keep my fingers crossed for you over the next few weeks. Let us know how it all turns out. BIG HUGS to you, chin up and think positive that all will turn out great.

She is very fussy with hard feed as she has never had it so we are trying different kinds of feed to fin out if she will eat any of them

Good luck honeywell, I hope you guys can come up with something to help her. I too don't know much about the breeding side of things. Are you hard feeding her at the moment? Can she maybe have some milk pellets (check with the vet first and just a few for starters) to help with her weight? I do know the trainer does feed the mare yoghurt as well if they are scouring. Fingers crossed.

She is already on very limited grass and has hay 24/7. The vet called again this morning to take more blood and drop off some Kaolin and electrolites to feed her. Sigh ... it is not looking good for either of them at this stage  but we live on in hope! I will try and get hold of some herbal remedies!

Doen't sound good Honeywell. I am suprised that the vets did not give you advice on what to do to help your mare. Tari has given some good advice. I am new to the breeding scene so can't really give you any advice sorry. But I can offer you my support and concern. Good luck and I really do hope she gets better.

Can you take her off the grass and give her just hay as a couple of mour mares have ended up with diarohea since the spring growth has come thorugh but not to the same extent we have just fed hay out to help bind them up a bit.  The other thing is try contacting one of the herbal companies who makes horse item and see if they have something that can help with her liver incase that is causing some problems but make sure you tell them she is infoal as I know when one of our mares wasnt keeping condition on dueing winter it took a while for us to find a product that she could take.  If you have a paddock of older grass(not likely at this time of the year) try moving her into that and see if that makes a difference we are lucy as the mares I look after run on a huge farm so we can always find the right paddock/grass if we have to
