crystal=] RR Vice President (26770) | haha i know! thats exactly how i felt about it, but then a few people have told you can ride them pretty much up until a month before they're due.
i know its important for them to get exercise throughout the pregnancy though, right?

LightMyFire RR Citizen (899) | Personally, not long. I know some people do, but imagine being pregnant and uncomfortable, and then having to give someone a piggy back? -: Toyota :- that lol.

crystal=] RR Vice President (26770) | cause i know that some studs do grazing for dry and wet mares, how long would you recommend riding the mare for during the pregnancy?

LightMyFire RR Citizen (899) | Grazing at stud is really expensive. But that does depend on where you go though. The place that my mare went to was at the home of a vet, and that was $8 or $9 a day plus GST. Other places are a lot more expensive. And I think you'll find that most studs wouldn't allow you to keep your mare there for her whole pregnancy anyway. If you could lease a small block of land, or find a private property with grazing available etc, it would be easy, it's just finding a place like that which is hard.

crystal=] RR Vice President (26770) | do you think it would be easier to just keep her at the stud the whole time? (this is all hypothetical btw )

LightMyFire RR Citizen (899) | Not owning your own property makes it harder. You need to make sure in advance you can have definite grazing at places with appropriate knowledge (for when you're not around, if something happens) and facilities. I'm in the same area of Auckland as you, and I found it quite hard to find grazing for my pregnant mare. During pregnancy looking after them is really easy. Weaning is easy if you do it properly. Weaning is only difficult for those who make it difficult

crystal=] RR Vice President (26770) | im considering the possibilty of breeding from charm in 2011/2012 and want to know how difficult it really is.
i know i wont be able to keep her at pc for long, and before the foal is due i would send her to the stud for them to deliver the baby, etc etc
but during and after pregnancy and then weaning etc - how hard is it?
if you get what i mean
