Brooks Apprentice (6) | I have friends that breed their mares as three year olds so the foal as a four year old. In my opinion that is too early, as they are still just babies themselves.
If it was needed I would breed as a four year old to foal as a 5yr old however ideally I think 5yrs - 9yrs a good starting point.
As mares get older they wont take so easily & some are infertile by 15yrs. No harm in trying though if you have a really nice older mare.

we were taught that 13 is technically the max age you should be breeding a maiden mare but this can obviously have a bit of lee-way if the mare is in excellent health/fitness and has good genital conformation i.e. lips meet evenly with no openings and she hasnt started to become sunken in yet as this can increase the risk of infections because poop starts to sit on the shelf that it creates

*Ghost* RR Governer (8710) | Mini's get put infoal when they are two. BUT some dont get infoal until they are ready. When we where in auckland with my severliy(sp) handcapd sister the blimen stallion got in the herd and got too yearlings in foal, but they where big fat healthy things, we didnt know they wwere infoal till we went to get them to shift them to town and both of them had a foal.
But they where the best mothers we had ands raised the foals really well. We would NEVER put them infoal that age.
But if the mares ready she will get infoal.
But i woulnt be happy put a maiden mare over 16 infoal my self but thats my opion

S A R A H H :] RR Governer (9398) | Missy had her first foal either at 3 or 4.. The vet reckoned she'd had a few foals before we got her and she had Buzz a month after she turned 6.. But she was at a station so I guess they dont really control the herds?
But I reckon what Crystal said would be about the good ages

crystal=] RR Vice President (26340) | minimum age (imo): 5 - but this would depend on the horses maturity
maximum age (imo): 17-18, but this would depend on the health of the maiden mare (would get a vet check to make sure it would be ok to breed from first anyway though - of course)
