You can also do calf raises, balancing on that ankle whilst going up and down etc. Do work on both sides but more on the sore ankle. Also joint suplements

get physio to help strengthnen it.I fractured and crushed the bone in my ankle and didnt get it looked at and now have alot of pain with it(its unfixable) but physio does help and they give you lots of exercises to keep it flexible and stronger.
I no this post is really old haha but im not on that much.....

I have had a couple of situations where my ankle has locked up during a lesson and I have not been able to move, fortunately for me this was a riding fitness issue and strength so since I have been riding regularly for a couple of years now it hasn't happened again.

I do use flexy irons, and I don't force my feet to be straight in the stirrups as is traditionally expected.

Does it help to have your toes pointing out some more?

yep ripped the ligiments in my right ankle after a horse slipped and fell on me and then put a ton of weight on my left ankle cause I refused to stop riding...now thats got stress damage.

sounds like I need some flexi irons!
I also should strap them everytime I ride but hell thatd be annoying

Yep;  ditto the flexi irons.
I also have one of my achilles strapped all the time, and generally the night before I compete I take nurofen also

I dunno if BOT would help, but I tore the ligaments in my wrist and BOT really helped that :)

Well one of my ankles can get really sore while Im riding and is just really hard to keep my ankle down.
The main problem I think is that I actually had a bone chip in that ankle a while ago which never healed properly coz I kept riding and refused to get a cast :$
So is there anything I can do to help strengthen my ankle and make it easier? Or do I just have to grin and bear it?
