What breed is your mare?
If you seriously want to breed, you need to take into account anything she is lacking, be it conformation or whatever, and look for a stallion that has those qualities.
Mares start cycling normally around September-ish. I personally prefer to get my mares inseminated towards the end of Ocotober, then you get sort of early October foals. I don't like them any earlier than that as we're still coming out of winter. Though at work we have some foaling as early as mid August!
I don't believe in breeding mares under the age of 5 or 6 either, as they are still maturing.
A mare is pregnant for approximately 11 months 11 days.
