do not carry a cane or a whip with a foal!!!!and at 7 or 8months old should not be mouthed.but the turning away from you is true

a few other tips is wat tari said also when you start taking him into inhand more and more if you want to carry anything with you to keep in line carry a cane instead of a whip. If your in best turned out its oviously good to look smart wear a nice outfit thats sensibale and somethign maybe the colour that suits your foal you can also have your foal wear a showing browband. There are some rules to inahnd i think a bout how old your horse/pony has to be to wear a bit and show chain even if its is used to them not sure. also lol in inhand turn your horse away from you instead of across when being asked to trot out and back possibly in inhand this is could cos then you horse dsnt lose its balance and striding. sorry it was alot hpe it helps

http://forums.horsetalk.co.nz/viewtopic.php?t=9570 theres the site page there. well u cant really see the handlers on the photos, but maybe if u put a thread on there asking waht u did on here you will get more info as they are mainlym ore 'mature' people that are right into there showing

when i was stewarding @ the Cambridge A&P in the inhand sporthorse section
most of the handlers had 'fancy' hats on also. if you go onto www.horsetalk.co.nz and look in the Show Time forum people have posted photos of them with there horses @ A&P's. hope this helps :)

The main thing with inhand showing is to teach your horse to lead at the shoulder, there is nothing worse than seeing a horse running behind the handler or the handlhaving trouble keeping up.  Wear clothes you can run in as a lot of the classes are mostly done at the trot.  Most people these days have black pants/skirt and black jacket but if you are riding on the same day you can also wear your riding gear.  Make sure before you go out that you can handle your horse if it gets a scare etc as there first outing is always scarey.

There is a new article in the Jan H&P about a beginners guide to showing, I think it is so you could read that coz I think it has some good info in it

Hi all,
I have recently brought myself a foal, he will be 7 or 8 months when I get him in March / April 07 and was wondering if any advice could be given on showing in hand.
I have competed my first horse in dressage & show jumping.
Can I have some advice of the what the rules are for showing in hand.
Not a career move, just wanted to give it a go to get my young horse used to all the excitment etc
