That's rather unusual. Normally by around 4-5 months they have become quite independant and not spending that much time around mum, apart from drinking. At work we wean at about 4-5 months, I personally don't wean until 6 months. Also your method of weaning is important too. I wean gradually, far easier and less stressful. |
Yeah, i didn't think there would be too many other people who wean after 11-12 months! I realise that most foals are quite independent before this age, but I am curious as to why my friend thinks that way! And it certainly doesn't sound a very practical way, keeping the foal with its mum for nearly a whole year, does it? |
Well apparently in the wild the foal only gets weaned when the dam pops out the next baby? But I'm not sure if that's correct, and how that works with lactation and the colostrum produced in the first milk if the mare is lacating year round?

Timtamkiwi RR Governer (9110) | foal at work was weaned at 5months - but she had already started not needing mum and she was only put on the other side of the fence, so mum and foal can still talk to each other

shawdee Super Jockey (128) | I have an experienced, knowledgeable friend who breeds ponies on a smallish lifestyle block and she goes by the interesting principal that ideally a foal should be left with its mother for at least the length of the pregnancy, ie 11+ months, and not be weaned before then. Does anyone agree with this concept? What do others think?
