HitTheLights Intermediate Jockey (43) | Got him home last night, I think I talked Mom out of getting the mare (so we don't have 4 million mini babies!) and now my stallion is chilling in my urban backyard.. fully fenced luckily For a horse that hasn't been handled he's doing amazing, I led hime round brushed him and picked up his feet easily yesterday.. he seemed a bit wary of food, but I'm sure that'll change! Haha Nippy I don't think even a mini would fit in my car!

Nippy - moderator RR Vice President (16425) | Green mini + stallion = patient firm owner Do not let your wee stud get the better of you, they WILL try you out and they CAN get quite full of themselves. Lucky enough they are small and so you more or less will always have the advantage but it still pays to be alert and focused when handling stallions, especially around mares. Treat your minis like you would a big horse, dont let their cuteness get in the way. Just as you would train a big horse to respect your space, to lead with ease and have good general ground manners so should the mini. Bad habits such as nipping, lunging forward or pulling you when leading, flicking out a hind leg, dithering about when tied up and not letting you pick up feet should all be worked on to stop further habits occuring as a result.

Nippy - moderator RR Vice President (16425) | Heres a few tips on minis
1. They are so cute that they are addictive, you cant just have ONE. So watchout for the cute trap. 2. They ALL know how to blow up like ballons at the mere mention of food. 3. They dont know that they are small, especially stallions and pompas geldings. 4. Most a born experts at escaping out of paddocks. 5. All mini foals look like they should be sitting pretty on your bed..so small and so cuddly. 6. In winter they disappear - instead you have walking hair balls. 7. Open doors are invitations to minis to come in - whether that be shed, chicken coop, garage or your house, heck even your neighbours house is not safe once the wee houdini escapes from its paddock! 8. Anything that SMELLS like food is ok in their minds for them to eat, taste or lick - examples being...road side trash, school lunch boxes, kids hands or faces, dog/cat food etc etc 9. Inside vehicles are well known to minis as another source of gathering food. You may just find a small equine snuffling around in the back of your car ..do be warned that the 'walking hair balls' in winter can give you quite a fright when you happen to see them in your rear vision mirror! 10. Many miniature horses should be renamed mini bulldozers. Destruction and mayhem are left in their wake.

So, me and Mom bought our first minis today.. we've got an 11yo chestnut mare, really friendly, and a 5yo stallion. We've got a couple of sessions with the guy at the stud before we bring them home, but are there any other tips, especially for green minis? |
Sorry, off topic I know, but is 'mom' a typo or are you American? Couldn't help noticing... Good luck with your mini!
