Teehee...but they are sooooooo cute when they are babies. Its like having your stuffed animal toys come to life...you just want to hug'em'all!! Good call however on the decision. Have to do what suits best.

i am just quoting what a fully qualified, certified dentist has told me/taught me, and from seeing all the mini's we have done (which is quite a few btw - including the smallest horse in the south pacific) most of them have had quite a few serious problems - especially with their incisors (front teeth).
and fyi nippy, i never told people to 'watch out' - she asked for tips and i told her what i know.
the problem we see with most minis is they aren't treated like normal horses and are overlooked when it comes to dentistry - especially the type of dentistry that they require. |
FYI MOST minis ARE well looked after and DONT get over looked in any department. Go talk to all the mini horse breeders, the showies and members of the mini associations see if MOST of their minis are overlooked in the dentist department. These people own a large percent of the mini population in NZ. Perhaps you are talking about the people that own PET minis who dont really know that they should be having their horses teeth seen to. So I totally disagree with the word MOST minis not being treated like normal horses and overlooked in the detistry department.
AND FYI I did not say YOU told people to watch out did I. It was a general statement.
I get me knickers in a twist when people really put down mini horses (not saying you are Crystal!) and that they have lots of issues.
Any horse has problems if you neglect areas of their health and care.
Crystal just be carefull that you are not labelling the mini horse breed with teeth issue because you are learning about all the things that MAY be wrong with their mouths/teeth. To say most have issues in this area is not quite correct.

Proud SB Owner RR Governer (6133) | Dentist took a look in my 7yo minis gob when he was here and said is teeth are in great shape and theres no problems there nor should any arise. I mentioned the too many teeth for such a small mouth thing and he laughed and said thats not true. He compared them to a child... They have the same amount of teeth as an adult but they are sometimes adult sized rather than kids size... abit like when a kid loses their baby teeth and grow their adult ones they look too big in their mouth. he said minis are the same in that respect but it dosnt cause a problem if they are regularly seen to just like ANY horse should be.

No its not a HUGE concern and people who go around saying "Oooo watch out, minis have lots of teeth troubles"..need to get a reality check. EVERY horse needs their teeth looked at, whether it be mini, donkey, clydy, arab,TB etc etc etc. No big deal. Yes there are a few extra things to watch out for but you are going to get your horse seen by a dentist anyway, as most dedicated horse owners do. So there is no cause to really justify anyone being afraid to get a mini because of teeth trouble.
IF you are going to show and breed THEN you DO have to pay attention to any horses teeth...again not just minis. |
I have my minis teeth checked every year...HAVE HAD NO SERIOUS TROUBLES AT ALL. So I totally disagree with Crystal in that regard. |
Agree, my big horses have far worse teeth than any of our mini's.

its a case of: "too many teeth in too small a mouth"
get a qualified dentist out who uses power to work on their teeth - they're the only tools that can fit inside a mini's mouth.
and they will work on their incisors as well which usually have quite a few problems going on (baby teeth don't shed and end up being in the way of the permanents which have no where to go)
email me if you have any other questions on dentistry: crystal.elliott26@hotmail.com |

We have never had any issues with our minis teeth, the only one that had was the american minis. As they got down sized oar to fast. |
does your dentist use specialized equine dental power equipment or hand floats/rasps? |
We have never really needed the dentist, but for my little old girl. she just needs her back ones smoothed. If we look at a horse that has teeth problems we wont buy it and we certainly wont breed from it. But i have seen some that need tools. Like my appy i had she had to get a tooth ripped out and it took a lot of people, but she was a rescue and due to it been infected as the people never took her she dies of a heart attack a month latter, the tooth had rotated. But none of our herd have teeth problems.
