CessBee RR Addict (3920) | Cessie just does them. I just give a stronger aids than I would for walk to trot and she goes up into canter. What can be good for sharpening up the reaction is to do the "click and gallop exercise" from walk or halt, click and dig your heels in untill he goes up, I did this without a contact at first untill she understood what I wanted., that should in theory be easy for him as he is a tb and even if he was only trialed he should still now how to go from zero to fast in one bound, its one of the first things they are taught. Once you have the transition itself going, then work on fine tuning it.

Feet RR Addict (3348) | Well my big pony did PERFECT walk canter transitions on both reins today, and yesterday was only the first time I had started him on them. He also does canter to walk.
And the last three rides, I have been doing counter canters, and also flying changes across the diagonal...I'm a little bit too strong with my change aid though and I sometimes get a wee bucky ...the right to left is really good, but the left to right (his more difficult side anyway) takes a few repeat aids. BUT, so far, he has changed cleanly every time....so I am absolutely wrapt with him - he learns so fast, and for a BIG horse he is exceptionally well balanced.
With him, I just make sure the 'connection' is there at walk and that he is really stepping under, then simply give the canter aid.

Kaimanawa Kween RR Vice President (21843) | Yes the repition works really well! although he starts to anticipate it a bit and jig jogs when when we com to the spot somtimes, but hes prtty god now lol

Evelyn RR Governer (6426) | Possibly his balance is not yet there sufficiently for him to cope with the transition.
Requires a reasonable degree of collection, the horse must also be VERY obedient to the canter aid.
Watch also that you don't tip forward in your enthusism to get the transition.
You can use a pole on the ground or a small cavaletti to encourage the jump into canter. Work on walk/trot/walk transition becoming very active.
Work on asking in exactly the same spot every time - horses LOVE repetition. Initially ask for the canter from trot in your chosen spot, Once he has anticipated this transition attempt to get it from walk. Once he understands then you can start asking elsewhere.

Kaimanawa Kween RR Vice President (21843) | he only does it like 40% of the time - 3 weeks to nail it! eek! When he doesnt do it, hes runs into this ugly trot for a few step. Ew haha gotta get rid of that

Twiggles RR Governer (7896) | i get twiggley off my leg first by doing lots of walk-trot transitions although shes much better now. I use my seat and a strong leg aid and think of squeezing her 'up' into the canter..this usually works and she picked it up fine, i now have to use less leg and she does simple change thru walk easy as

Kaimanawa Kween RR Vice President (21843) | Thats lucky, Cruise doesnt know voice commands! hah but He did it on one leg yesterday, it was "tidy" But he did it with no trot steps! im pretty heppy, hes learning faster than i thought. Struggles more on one leg than the other though..

Lollie RR Vice President (26559) | Both my horses know walk-trot-canter on voice command so then I taught it on the lunge just for fun, then one day I just collected Angel up in the walk and used my canter leg aid and said "canter". Same with Ghost. Both had it within the first few tries

Kaimanawa Kween RR Vice President (21843) | Thanks moo - that sounds like the best way to teach it for Cruise. Going to try that today. Nervous about this elementary test - I know its a bit above us but i thought id give it go

he needs to be soft and supple and foward off the transition in trot before you ask.. basicly i taught pilgrim by walk to trot to canter each time with about 10 strides in between then narrow then down little by little making the way you ask more of a squeeze with the inside leg on the girth and the outside leg just behind the girth and squeeze the horse up into the bridle fowards into canter. No point untill you have your 'go' and 'stop' button sorted at walk trot and canter. you need to be confident your horse has the strength to sit back and collect up as its not easy for a light horse whos lacking suppleness and muscle just keep going.. go walk to trot to canter then shorten the strides of trot.. this way keeps them relaxed and they understand what you are wanting to do a bit more |
This is what i did with Tommy, slowly take trot strides until there is none. I agree with the horse needing to have the strength.

TammyWammy RR Addict (2936) | With Extreme i would just collect him up then really squeeze and click then release only when he cantered. He would trot then canter a few times but after a few goes he got it. Just don't let go of the reigns when you ask for canter as they'll trot

ive taught it by starting with little turn on the quarters circles left, but still walking forward (with inside bend and quarters in) and then turn to the right, pushing the quarters in to the right and right bend.. and then they get it like that and she just links it to being on a straight line also lol.. |
haha whoops that last one was waaay wrong. that doesnt really make any sense tho..
