I think it's crazy - dressage is about the way the horse goes not the rider!

If a horse is not getting the marks then they need to go away and school more. If the rider is at fault then the rider needs to study more.

My belief is that money is the root of the lack of entries. Riders at lower levels tend to ride in many disciplines - I know I did!

When I competed in Horse Society competitions in UK (long time ago) there was only one membership and registration fee that covered all disciplines. If they did that then I think more peole would compete in dressage as well as SJ or Eventing. It just costs too much to register in all disciplines.

You're telling me! Just shelled out $245! So glad I'm not doing graded HTs!!

ok cool, yeah Im registered and stuff but dont really want to have to go through the hassle/cost of registering him for dressage if it turns out to not really be our thing, but its good they do day regos, now I can do a few on him. I didnt realise they did them is all :P
Might register him next season if I enjoy it :P

you can get a 6 start registration that is cheaper. its what im getting fern so that i dont have to do the full year registration :)

the yellow dressage stickers? i think those are a really good idea :)

Definately, and you can carry them over from one year to the next as well if you only do a couple of competitions. Also I think they are transferable.

If you are going prelim only and going to do 8 starts per year then the prelim dressage registration is only $40 and you get the grading points etc.

It is money, that is the biggest problem, and to be honest the fees being split into the disciplines is to blame.

I would much rather pay $80 a year to register for all disciplines (at a lower level) than $40 (prelim start) for dressage only, and to be honest I don't intend to jump or event. To get the eventers, show jumpers etc along to registered dressage and give a percieved value for money I can't see any other way of doing it.

I was talking to my partner last night about this and to us it is the percieved lack of value from our membership that really gets us.

It doesn't, and that's what DNZ seems to not get.  Restricting some classes might be more attractive to some (it's easier/less intimidating/more chance of placing), but like Evelyn said money is the root of the issue.  Offering both non-graded and graded level 1 (which be basically the same as what's happening now, yes?  Just getting DNZ in on the action) seems to be a reasonable compromise.

And that is where the system is a discouragement to try an new level.

Not having a go, but you illustrated the downside to the system.

So back to the root of the problem, how does this encourage bigger membership and participation?
