macca2010 RR Citizen (680) | I used Equine direct weight booster on my skinny TB and a friends 40 year olf pony and it worked brillantly. Up the Nutririce to stamina and performance then you can feed more calories without increasing the concentrate size. http://www.trademe.co.nz/Browse/Listing ... =312575618

thanks:) I'll get some copra and rice bran oil and see if that helps too. They've both wormed a week before I moved them and recently had their teeth done by a good dentist, their covers are nice and warm and waterproof without being overboard both about 180-200gm fill. silly question but with the boiled rice is that literally just rice boiled up (cooked) and added in the feed and how much would you put in? that sounds like a good cheap option. I can only split feed them a few times a week on my days off as I can't get there in the morning when i'm at work. |
Yea it is just rice boild up. I use the budget stuff from the supermarket, I was feeding 500gm (dry weight before boiling) when I was feeding it and my horse put on weight |
Yea I don't know how much I was feeding I just chucked some in
Great mixed with boiled barley and sugar beet with a bit of molasses to taste. Ponies LOVE it, especially warm in winter

PennysGirl Super Jockey (121) | My mare has improved in weight with breeda and fibrepro. Also diamond v yeast from steed health is good to help with digestion meaning they take maximum nutrition out of hay rations.

That was going to be my next suggestion too - specially down here in the SI - you can get baleage in the same size as conventional hay bales, they sell for about $15-$20 a bale (check on Trade Me) CRT down here stocking them for $18.20

Lollie RR Vice President (26559) | Baylage is fantastic, and I'd switch the lurcerne chaff for fibre sure Boiled rice is also great for weight gain. I found Yakult really good as a pro biotic, and feeding them two or three times a day if possible. Like Bilbo suggested I'd check their worming and teeth are up to date and also that they're warm enough (but remember too warm can also cause weight loss - more once they get to the sweaty stage).

Absolut Executive Jockey (393) | Mine & Macro1's horses are on three acres, and get very limited grass - they get hay, copra, sugarbeet and oaten chaff along with the required supplements for each horse most people when they see our horses comment on what great condition they're in (one is actually on diet now as she's a bit too big) Copra is great for putting on weight (and is a base ingredient for a lot of feeds), but make sure you soak it before feeding, you could also try getting some Fiberpro.

Bilbo1 RR Governer (6682) | Give them as much hay as they can eat - look to add a 1/2 cup ricebran oil to their feed and ca you split feed them?
Kikuyu grass is fine (doesn't normally lead to weight loss) but it does bind calcium therefore affecting their intake - would look to adding a calcium supplement (I use Alleviate C) especially for your youngster as bone growth the most important thing for her at that younng age. A good probiotic will help (is that Feed Aid??).
Have they been wormed lately or since you have m oved them? Maybe worth bomb drenching them for about 4 days. Teeth done? Are they warm enough?

Keane Super Jockey (136) | I've just recently moved my two horses to some grazing that is kikyu (can't remember spelling) I know its really crap grass but its the only grazing I can find in my price range and location at the moment. Over the last 3 weeks they have lost a considerable amount of weight especially my 2 1/2 year old filly. I have been feeding them 2 scoops of lucerne chaff, 2 scoops of nutririce allrounder (it is 10& fat content) and a scoop of barley plus their supplements, muscle max and feed aid every day.
I have only just been able to get some hay which I am picking up today, but is there ANYTHING I can give them either add or change in their diet I'm at a loss here and I'm trying to sell one of my horses, I'm even getting complaints from other grazers about their weight, help!!!
