Biggest thing for me is making sure they're scrubbed to perfection (as in NO dust or scurf) ESPECIALLY along their crest and dock. HATE icky plaits.
Any white markings have to be perfect.
Manes pulled or plaited perfectly, same goes for tail, and must be cut VERY straight (I actually lye down behind mine at eye level and make sure there's not a strand out of line, but I know my horses well and trust them, wouldn't even dare with horses I didn't know super well. And wear a helmet!). Fetlocks either need clipping or trimming perfectly and same with bridle path.
Personally, unless it's an actual show (as in classing) as opposed to SJ or eventing I would just use a coat shine spray over baby oil, I feel that baby oil looks over the top for anything other than showing, I like that coat shine just gives them a nice healthy glow/shine :) Show sheen still works on clipped ponies )
If all the basics (as listed above) are done well then nothing extra should be necesarry :)

I'm grooming for a friend at my first show next weekend. I'm pretty sure I will only need to look after 2/6 ponies - a chestnut and a dapple bay.

I was wondering whats some tips and tricks to make them look extra good?
I'm already planning on baby oil bathing the one, but the other one has a full clip, will it still work?
