I put an older horse in with mum and bubs - at least a month minimum before weaning - this way the mare accepts the new horse and the foal bonds with the new horse too. Then I use two paddocks side by side and watch to see if the foal spends periods of time way from mum. If this is happening I close the gate for short periods to introduce separation and make sure they are back together at night. If all is going well - I separate and keep separate then after a few days move mum well away. It is important to have a good bond established between the new paddock mate and the foal so the foal feels secure in their familiar paddock.

A good way to do it is: Put the mares and foals in seperate paddocks (together, though)and leave them like that for a day. At night put them back to gether. Do the same thing 1 or 2 more times. Eventually just do it and leave them that way, and the foals won't even flinch about it. We did that for our foals this year and it worked out fine. But if u only have 1 foal u should leave put an older, mature mare or gelding with the foal. :) hope i helped :D

Agree with this. Also remember to check your mares udder as she is drying off :)
I definitely prefer the gradual weaning method. So much less stressful and easier.
If you have already taught the foal to lead while it's on mum, and have started taking it for walks away from mum and it is comfortable with that, you are well on the right track.

Yeah they have been in with other horses together.
Lilith has taken quite a shining to my mini, so I thought that they would be good together.
And Lady has buddied up with one of the other mares.

when we weaned Buzz we put another horse in with him and Missy about 3-4weeks before we split them up so that he had a 'friend' and then we put Missy in the paddock next door. But I had already taken Missy away from him little bits at a time so he got used to being away from her then it wasnt such a massive ordeal

I had thought about that, but Im worried that they will go through the fence.
Lilith (the foal) has already discovered how to jump fences, the last time was not successful, and carved up her legs.
Ive taken her away from her mum when Ive been handling her, and she wasnt too worried.

Im more worried about the mum tbh.
This is her first foal, and she gets extremely anxious and unsettled when I take Lilith away, even with close distants.

I was thinking about maybe just seperating them completely, and putting them both in with their friends.
Or not a good idea?

pick up foal - remove off property.
harsh, but it works.  only if you are taking two or more babies at the same time though.

So its time that I wean my wee monster.

What method of weaning do you find best?
