Jody Hartstone was just up last weekend - she charges $100.00.

I absolutely loved my lesson with her, found her really down to earth and blunt speaking (I like that in a person but not everyone does) and she was not at all offended when I questioned anything and everything time & again.

It was quite, quite different to other trainers I have tried but I have to say that I barely worked up a sweat and he was going so forward, so softly and sweetly.

She then jumped on old Max and got him doing his first ever flying changes in about 4 minutes!

I hardly slept that night because I kept thinking about the lesson and rewinding it in my head, over and over.

Would I get lessons from her again?  Definately!

Though I truely believe you can learn "something" from a wide variety of instructors and it come down to the horses personality and your personal preference.

I spent 3 years of fortnightly lessons with a very resentful horse (nothing against the trainer who was, without doubt, very successful, just more he didn't suit the methods) and he is now so chilled out and obliging now.

when you say blunt, how blunt is she ? ie rude, i like a trainer who is to the point and honest, but must also be patient and easy to get along with. What part of Auckland were the lessons in and how long were the lessons ?
That sounds good she can get on your horse and get it going nicely, i always like a trainer who can do that.

she's not rude, just honest and to the point. That was north auckland.

I would call her rude. She told my friend's little sister (who was about 11/12max at the time) that her pony was dangerous and she should sell it, because it didn't halt perfectly within 3 strides once. You could ask why bother having a lesson with her at that age but it was for some PC team thing, totally uncalled for. The pony in question was taking her around training eventing in a snaffle no problems at the time, they soon moved up to open, then she sold her to a wee dude who was starting ODEs and SJ on her and they had a blast together. It's one of the safest ponies I know.
Have had lessons with her myself, found her ok, not great, she's a good rider but I didn't find she instructs that well, I prefer Nicolette.

Favourite dressage instructor is Bill Noble though, he's super, doesn't beat around the bush, very fair, and a good laugh :) Gives HEAPS to work on between lessons.

Nicolette Barrett is awesome - she trains under/with Jody - comes to Auckland every 6 weeks or so. My trainer gets lessons with her - $65 for 45 mins I think.  We are in Whenuapai.

ive also had lessons with penny castle and found her wonderful for my horse.
my regular coach was lizzie brown who also had lessons from penny so i would just tag on at the end of a clinic that penny was doing :) i used to also sit in on some of the lessons that penny gave to lizzie and learnt soo much from just watching lizzie :) penny would sit with me at the end of the arena and point out things to me that lizzie was doing wrong and stuff :)
i know that simon gordon trains with penny, hes in karaka somewhere, so no doubt that she will be coming up at some point during the winter :)

No, definately not rude just straight to the point without any window dressing.

Another one I would not hesitate to recommend (who is somewhat cheaper (about $60 odd a lesson) is Jose Dill.

She is a young german rider - but very much into getting your horse forward, first and foremost and absolutely no backward pull on the reins i.e. not that rigid hand thing.

I watched a couple of lessons she took and only had one with her (before horse was turned out for winter) - but really really enjoyed it.

She lives North but I think comes down regularly to Auckland if she has enough interest to make it worth her while.

Vanessa is amazing, best dressage trainer iv ever had. She got my pony from ewe-necked stargazer who couldnt even canter with a rider who didnt even know what to do, to successfully doing novice level. Shes fantastic and so knowledgeable about everything from saddles to feed to competition strategy.
Iv also had lessons with Penny Castle, who is quite similar and also rides at GP herself. Shes awesome too and really explains the technical stuff so you actually understand why youre doing certain stuff

Jody Hartstone is AWESOME! I'd really recommend her. I agree, Vanessa and Jody are different- I guess it depends on the way you want to ride.

do you know when Jody will be coming up to Auckland next ?

probably for the next Andrew/Manuela Mclean clinic.
There are a few dressage instructors in the auckland area who have trained under her and train the same way as her and Andrew/Manuela.

(for Auckland instructors)

I haven't had lessons with Sheena but she is a positive supportive rider and person, she is also working with some younger horses at the lower levels at the moment so will know exactly what you are going thru!

I train with Carolyn Hansen and Bill Noble and find that it is a good mix, maybe you could try 2 coaches, one to stabilise you (like Carolyn does for me) and one to push you well out of your comfort zone (like Bill does)

It would help if you do that to have coaches that complement each other, or even better train together.

yes, this is what i do as well - my weekly instructor is Melissa Crombie (she knows Charm and they really click together), but my monthly (soon to be hopefully) is Sheena Ross - she's excellent for me, and I've only ever had good results from training with her.

Yes this is what i was thinking of doing, training with Andrea bank regularly and inbetween Vanessa way lessons to keep me on track and then training with Vanessa way to push me a bit further, probably once a month when she comes up to Auckland.
