Overweight Horse

A horse that is overweight is intaking on a daily basis more calories than it is expending to carry out the activities of the day. Therefore if trying to reduce a horses weight what goes in must be reduced or energy that is expended daily must be increased, or both!

Overweight horses do not require supplementary feed, however providing vitamins and minerals is necessary especially if they are being asked to work. A concentrate vitamin and mineral pellets such as NRM Equine Balancer is suitable in these situations.

Pasture intake can be restricted but it is important to remember that 1.5% of the horses body weight is provided daily in pasture/hay or chaff to ensure the health of the digestive tract.
